I don't know what you consider expensive, of course. But we've stopped at the Catalonia Excelsior and didn't think it too dear. Inside it's a modern/refurbished hotel so not "olde worlde charming". It's well located for the centre sights, plenty of eating options around and convenient for public transport to other parts of the city and the railway station and airport link. Its main fault, when we were there, was no kettle in the room so do bring your own unless they've corrected that mistake.

We always stay at the Hostal Venecia. It's in the city center near the city hall. Very close to one of the train stations (walking distance). There are often festivals in the city square, so if you enjoy that type of thing you can sit on your balcony and watch all the action. The rooms are modern, but not big. We find them to be just fine, though. I think we paid 100 bucks in June.

Dear michellekerg, it would be better if you make yourself clear. Do you wanna hotel, not too expensive for you (at this item I agree with Nick that it's a difference for each person)? Do you wanna cheap hostel to stay in for some days with fair prices and conditions?

I spent 2 nights at the Sorolla Centro. Comfortable, clean, about $86 per night when I was there, with Booking.com. Walkable to the downtown and old town, quite close to the in-town train station. I also enjoyed taking a public bus to the “City of Arts and Sciences” in the late afternoon. The buildings were all closed up, but the very modern architecture in the late afternoon light, then the sunset, then at night, was very impressive. A beautiful rainbow helped too!
