Logrono - San Mateo festival - How crazy crowded is it?

My partner and I are going to be visiting Northern Spain and are planning to stay in Logrono one or two nights. Our intent is to see the town, sample the food. check out the markets etc. However our timing could be made to overlap with the Fiesta de San Mateo (On Sept 20 or 21). We love local festivals but are concerned this one will mean the town is heaving with people and it will make it challenging to actually get to see the town. So my questions are: 1. Is it as crazy busy as I've read? Can you even walk through the streets with that many people? and 2. Even if it's crazy busy is it a must do? and 3. What's the town like on the days before the festival?

Thanks all for the input!

Based on your concerns and your timing I would recommend skipping Logron̈o those dates.

The Chupinazo is Friday and San Mateo is Saturday this means people wont be working and hoards will cone from the nearby towns. I live in the old town and most likely will go away for those days.

The fiestas last until the 26th. If you came on Thursday or Friday there will still be food tasting and activities but much calmer.

Thank you! We are going to plan on visiting just prior to the festival to avoid the rush.

Good move. Try not to be here on a Monday, many tapa bars are closed on Monday.

Sent you a PM.

I would not miss ANY festival in ANY town or city in Spain...it's a unique experience, lots of fun and with lots of activities. Of course you can walk in the streets and enjoy the wonderful atmosphere!

@MikelBasqueGuide you said

I invite you to come here on the 21st and walk my dogs for me in the morning. You can enjoy the wonderful activity of dodging vomit and piss and borachos trasnochados.

Of course, I was referring to those hours when a US citizen would walk in the city...midnight during festivals is VERY early for us, so I wouldn´t expect H&N to be out that (late) (early).

Mikel, just joking with you. There is a real problem the day after the chupinazo, but the street cleaners here do a really good job, and in general things are really clean.

:) You aren't wrong about the hours we tend to keep. We wouldn't likely be out and about too much after midnight. Thanks for the input. We are keeping an open mind depending on where the wind blows us that week but we do know a stop in Logrono is a must.

My guess is that you´ll be very pleasantly surprised at the family atmosphere in Logroño during San Mateo festivals (and in any other Spanish town during festivals), even past midnight you´ll see kids of all ages (and people in their 80s) on the streets having a great time. And I´m sure you will not mind staying past midnight to enjoy this lovely atmosphere.
