Lodging and must do for 1st time in Barcelona?

Hi all! We would love to know what is your top "must see" list in Barcelona, and what is the best neighborhood to stay in if we plan on trying to walk a lot to enjoy the city? We love museums, art, and historical landmarks. We plan to stay for about 5 days and then train to Paris for a bit. Thanks so much in advance for any advice!

Everyone is different. We stayed near the Passeig de Gràcia metro stop and walked almost everywhere. It was near the Gaudi houses, about 12 blocks from the Sagrada Familia, and away from the Ramblas with all its tourists.

Recommend staying in Eixample. We loved Hotel Praktik Rambla. Barcelona is amazing. The highlights for us were Sagrada Familia and the nearby Sant Pau Recinte Modernista

MNAC is the museum for art in Barcelona. I love modernisme (Catalan art nouveau) though Gaudi is a bit over the top for my taste. Here's a guide. My top sight is the Palau de la Musica - even if you just pass by, stop in the cafeteria for a drink and a look around. There are beautiful medieval churches. I once took the rooftop tour of the Santa Maria del Mar that was excellent.

Barcelona is a big city and the sights are spread out. The metro is fast, easy and inexpensive, the best way to get around much of the city.

I liked staying in Gracia near the Fontana metro stop. It was a real neighborhood, good restaurants and bakeries, a good hotel, metro stop one stop from a major metro artery. My must sees were all art nouveau buildings. With 5 days mix in a daytrip to Montserrat on a good weather day.

We enjoyed staying in the Eixample neighborhood at Hotel Gran Via. Lovely hotel and convenient to so many sights. The architecture throughout Eixample is beautiful.

I do also agree with Chris that Gracia is a nice neighborhood to stay in. This is a neighborhood where families live and children play in the plazas, ride bikes, etc.
