We (2 passengers) are traveling from León to Asturias for two days, with final destination of the coast, between Luarca and Cudillero. I am considering renting a car in León and driving there and back (we have a train from León to Madrid on the tail end). However, I am also considering taking the train from León to Oviedo, visiting there a few hours and then renting from there instead. Then we would return by train from Oviedo to León to catch our train back to Madrid. Any suggestions from experienced travelers in this area on which option sounds better? I speak fluent Spanish and English in case that has any bearing on your opinions. Thank you very much.

I drove that route a couple of years ago and made at least one roadside photo stop in the mountains, though I was pressed for time. I would have liked to make a longer stop, maybe around Potes on the N-621 and the Fuente De cable car, which I had read about in Rick's book at that time (but that chapter has since been eliminated).
Since you're traveling roundtrip on the route, you could try different roads. Or doing one direction by train could give the designated driver an opportunity to relax and look out the window, too.
