Two years ago we visited Barcelona and the Costa Del Sol. We are landing in Madrid late September and we are trying to plan the best of Spain with Madrid as the Hub. Suggestions welcomed. We thought perhaps to stay in Madrid the whole time and take day tours but perhaps we should venture elsewhere. So many wonderful seasoned travelers on this board!! Suggestions appreciated.
With six days, you could spend all your time in Madrid and environs.
My must sees:
-Prado
-Reina Sofia museum to see Picasso's Guernica
-One of the city markets-San Miguel Market is touristy yet fun.
-Walking tour of Madrid city center
-Exploring the Retiro Park
-Exploring a neighborhood outside the city centre
-daytrip to Segovia and another to Toledo
Ten Day Trips From Madrid (alphabetically)
- Alcalá de Henares
- Aranjuez
- Avila
- Chinchón
- Cuenca
- El Escorial
- Guadalajara
- Manzanares el Real
- Segovia
- Toledo
Within the city ...
• 2 smaller museums - Sorolla & Lazaro Galdiano.
• 2 Royal convents - Las Descalzas Reales & Encarnacian.
Thank you some wonderful ideas and I think we will stay, then in Madrid and tour around the area.
I appreciate and will study all of the suggested things to see!!

Avila looks wonderful and I am definitely adding that to the list. Manzanares el Real also looks like it would be worthwhile to visit. Thank you for making a list of town that I can research.

If you enjoy castles, there’s a nice one in Manzanares. Avila is nice for a half day, but nice to visit. You can get a great view of the city and walls from cuatro postes outside of town. Without a car, it may be to further than you want to walk.
