La Rambla in Barcelona Renovation / Remodeling / Face Lift

If you are going to Barcelona in the next three years, La Rambla is undergoing a major face lift. I have read something about making it less touristy and more resident friendly.

I am on Barcelona Facebook pages and this was a new discussion beginning today.

One side of La Rambla will be torn up and then the other side. Construction is noisy, dirty and ugly from what I am reading which is typical of construction.

I have also read that it is not terribly different from other cities that are remodeling. I live in downtown Austin and there are three or four towers going up all around me.

So if you are going to Barcelona and searching for a hotel, might want to keep this in mind.

If anyone reading this is currently in Barcelona or just returned, I would love to know more.

We are on a train right now from Barcelona to Madrid. We stayed two nights at Hotel Continental on La Rambla. We had a 3rd floor (actually on the 5th level) room with a balcony overlooking La Rambla. The construction didn’t bother us at all. We were able to sit on the balcony and enjoy the view. I don’t know when they started and stopped working because we didn’t really notice any noise. We use a white noise machine at night and had no trouble sleeping. The sidewalk in front of the entrance to the hotel is narrowed because of the construction, which makes it a little congested. There is still plenty of room for pedestrians in the center of the street. I would absolutely NOT avoid the area just because of the construction.

Thank you Carlos and sibdaisy

I am staying at the Hotel Continental. in October. Had great concerns after reading the information about this massive Urban Renewal project on Las Ramblas. Feel better sibdaisy.

Carlos, it is too late for me to change any of my plans. The link that you sent me is somewhat discouraging but ........ I will be posting my experiences.

I don't think it's too late to change plans, you still have a couple of months left. I usually book hotels a couple of weeks in advance.

Hi Carlos,

I am staying four nights. Maybe because of The American Cup, I have done some research and it is impossible to difficult to get a four night stay and what does exist is now extremely expensive.

The link that you sent me does not sound visitor friendly.

It sound like they are mainly working on the streets and the sidewalks. How is that going to make La Rambla more appealing to residents?

To be frank, nowadays locals tend to avoid Las Ramblas like the plague anyway. Honestly I haven't been following this story very closely, but I'm guessing they're trying to make it more friendly to locals, but it's going to be a process of construction until 2027.
