La Latina Neighborhood Madrid

My family and I (2 daughters ages 13 and 15) are traveling to Madrid for 5 nights. We rented an Airbnb in La Latina. Thoughts on this area? I do not want an area that is very touristy (i.e., restaurants with English menus out front, etc). I prefer to be in an area with great local restaurants (nothing fancy) as well as cafes and small stores where my kids can shop or run and grab an ice cream. Will I find this in La Latina?
Thank you.

You'll find all you ask for but there are many foreign of tourists. The street, Cava Baja, is known for bars, with some serving some good tapas; I don't know about English menus but menus likely have English translations. It used to be THE area to go for tapas at moderate prices and still gets a lot of foreigners. But you might not be on the street, so..

It is not a fancy neighborhood but it might be noisy, depending on whether your rooms face the street. There's a good food market in the area. I like the store selling espadrilles (alpargatas) off the Plaza Mayor.
