June trip to Andalucia with 13&16 yr old

The Germany page of this forum was SO helpful when I was planning our trip last year; we’re now planning for a June trip to Spain in 2024 (compulsive planner so aiming to get an idea of our plans! 😁).

I’ve been to Madrid, Toledo and Barcelona (family has not though) so wanted to visit Grenada and the Andalucia part of Spain on this trip. Seeing the Alhambra is the main reason I want to go there and so would want to build our trip around that as a must-do.

On our Germany trip Berchtesgaden and the surrounding area excursions were by far our favorite so I’m trying to find a spot that would similarly be a great base spot for some beautiful nature and non-city outings.
Anywhere in that region come to mind?
Ideal for me would be hitting Grenada, Sevilla and then a coastal village with pretty coves, and then this other spot per the above.

We’d be open to renting a car if that helps. We would land on a Sat and fly back 2 Sundays later.

Andalucia is a large area, with Seville and Granada being about 150 miles apart. ViaMichelin.com estimates the driving time at nearly 3 hours, and that doesn't include stopping, navigational errors, traffic tie-ups, etc. Trains take 2-1/2 hours or longer. Granada is probably the area with the best options for outdoor activities (check out the Alpujarras), but Seville is much larger and can consume four days or more. Plus you have Cordoba as a possible additional overnight destination or a day trip (less than 1 hour by train) from Seville.

I think the logical thing to do is spend some of your nights in Seville and some in or near Granada. There is some bus service to the Alpujarras, but you might want to rent a car for a day or two of rural exploration.

There are some very unattractive coastal spots in southern Spain, so select your coastal village with great care.

When you’re in Granada, take a couple/three hours to go up to the park above the Alhambra (la Dehesa del Generalife). It is a lovely, easily accessed “nature” destination within Granada.

For a costal town, consider Cádiz, which has a wonderful promenade and a beach right within the old town. Doñana Park is also accessible via car or tour. We loved our four nights in Cádiz last January and will be back as soon as we can!

June is well into the main tourist season. The coastal areas between Motril (south of Granada) and Cádiz (south of Sevilla) are some of the most visited beaches in Spain that time of year. Any place along there will be very busy and lodging prices will be elevated. Cádiz is a city, not a village, so might not be what you’re looking for. I suggest looking at beach areas not as popular with foreign tourists, e.g. east of Motril over to the Mojácar area. That is an area of Spain that is not on most tourists’ radar.

If you wanted to stay in a smaller town along the Costa de la Luz, then consider Chipiona or San Lucar de la Barrameda. Both are near Jerez de la Frontera and one can take a ferry over to Cádiz from either nearby Rota or Puerto de Santa María. Rota is a popular destination for German tourists and will be very crowded.

Since you’re not averse to renting a car, check out some of the beaches in the Huelva area. While in that area you could visit Doñana National Park and El Rocio. While I haven’t been to either one a regular contributor only has positive things to say about them. That part of Spain isn’t a huge tourist destination either.
