July in Spain

We are planning a trip in the end of July to Spain to visit our college student who will be studying in Madrid. Our plan is plan is to fly to Madrid to spend 3 nights, then to do 2 overnights...one in Toledo & one in Segovia. Is this a good itinerary? Is Barcelona a better place to spend the second half? We prefer historical visits to museum/art exhibit visits.

I've been to all those places most recently Madrid 3 months ago for the 2nd time.
Stick with the first itinerary. It has everything you prefer in travel. Though I like Barcelona better than Madrid,
I would not want to go to there in late July though; way too many tourists. I would never go to Spain in July again except for the Basque area a lot cooler

I agree; Madrid, Segovia, and Toledo. Save Barcelona for when you can spend at least 5 days there.

You will definitely be sizzling, however there are several solutions. Immediately adapt to Spanish customs and recognize late evenings are your friend for avoiding the heat. Also take advantage of the siesta to avoid the heat. In short, keep your meat out of the heat!
You have a good travel plan which maximizes your time on the ground during a relatively short duration. Barcelona is a destination worthy of it's own focus, try October.

That is basically the pattern we followed when our son spent his semester abroad at the Univ of Madrid. By way -- a great experience for him. We also hit Avila on the way to Segovia. We used the bus system for travel.
