Itinerary: Lisbon - Caceras - Seville - Albufeira - Lisbon

Hi Everyone,

My girlfriend and I are going to Lisbon in December and have decided to rent a car and drive to Caceres and Seville from Lisbon. We just can't miss their architectural/historical wonders after reading about them! I'm posting to ask for any advice about auto travel in this area (Andalusia / Extremadura). Has anyone on this forum rented a car and drove from place to place in this area? Any advice or mere experiences would be greatly appreciated!

Regards,
Travis

I did a wonderful road trip from Madrid to Lisbon a few years ago. Here’s a link to the Google map showing that portion from Seville through the Algarve and then up the eastern side of Portugal to the Duoro, Porto and then south to Lisbon.

Remember that dropping a car off in a different country than the one where you rented it can cost big bucks. In Portugal, make sure that you have a transponder to pay for tolls on major roads. I’d also advise getting an International Driver Permit from AAA.

You can get estimated driving times on the ViaMichelin.com website. If you zoom way in, any especially scenic roads will be highlighted in green.

I haven't driven in Europe, so I really can't help with driving issues. However, I'd anticipate parking challenges in Seville, at least. You'll need to consider the availability of parking as you choose hotels.

Seville really needs at least three full days (four nights) because of its size and the number of sights. The historic area of Caceres is really atmospheric and not small. I'd want two nights in Caceres to allow a full day there.
