Itinerary help - Travelling with kids in 6 days

My husband and I are travelling to spain with 2 boys (11,6) from Feb 14-24. We booked our tickets on a whim just a few hours ago. We and the kids are experienced travelers but this is our first trip to spain.

So far our itinerary looks like this -

Feb 15 - Land in Madrid at 8AM. Take the train to city centre and catch the AVE train to seville.

Feb 15,16,17 - Sleep in Seville

Feb 18,19,20,21 - Rent a car to drive around andulacia. Sleep in ??

Feb 22,23 - Drop off car and sleep in Madrid

Feb 24 - Fly back from Madrid.

We would love to experience the spanish life style, music/dance, culture/traditions and food. Less interested in museums and historic sites. Looking for any ideas on where to spend the other 4 nights and suggestions for family friendly experiences.

  • One or two flamenco shows ( Read about a place where we can get a flamenco lesson ? )
  • Bull fighting (Are there any this time of the year ?)
  • Any cooking lessons/food tours that the whole family would enjoy

Other places that caught our interest based on the few hours we spent researching the area -

Cordoba mosque, Gibraltar, white hill villages, Dancing horses show in Jerez(?), Alhambra palace (unsure about it with kids). Not including any beach towns because of the time of the year.

Please help us put together an itinerary and suggest any other places/experiences that the kids will enjoy.

Hi, I've been living in Seville for the last 10 years and I have kids myself, here are a few recommendations

  • One or two flamenco shows ( Read about a place where we can get a flamenco lesson ? )
I recommend either la casa del flamenco (http://www.lacasadelflamencosevilla.com) or Los gallos (http://www.tablaolosgallos.com)

  • Bull fighting (Are there any this time of the year ?)
Actually there are no bull fights this month. The bull fight season normally starts at the end of march.

  • Any cooking lessons/food tours that the whole family would enjoy
Kids may enjoy cooking rather than eating, I would recommend you check the cooking classes at http://tallerandaluzdecocina.com.

Other places that caught our interest based on the few hours we spent researching the area -

Cordoba mosque, Gibraltar, white hill villages, Dancing horses show in Jerez(?), Alhambra palace (unsure about it with kids). Not including any beach towns because of the time of the year.
The great mosque and the alhambra are must do. I wouldn't go to Gibraltar, it usually takes a lot of time to pass the frontier and there isn't much to see. Dancing horses are really impressive and it's a great activity for the kids but you need to book in advance and shows are only on Thursday (https://www.realescuela.org/en). There is a new aquarium in Seville wich could be a nice activity for the kids (http://www.acuariosevilla.es). It is also possible the rent kayaks and row through the city which is a lot of fun, it's also a different way to sightsee the city (http://kayaksevilla.com/ingles.php).

I hope that helps

LA CASA DEL FLAMENCO seems to have 2 different types of shows on the days we are there -

ARTE Y EMBRUJO
ESENCIA FLAMENCA

My kids idea of flamenco is ladies with pretty swirly colorful dresses and people clapping and stamping their feet.
Do you know which one of these shows can provide us that experience?

FoodLoverTourSevilla, Thank you for all the links. In addition to the dancing horses show, they seem to offer a short tour that includes - 'Visit to the Museum of Equestrian Art, Carriage Museum, Gardens, *Palace State Rooms and Saddlery' Is this something that is a must do. I think my kids would love riding the horses if that's an option.

We will look into the Kayak tour as well to see if my 6 year old is allowed on it.

Can I please get some recommendations on places(areas) to stay in seville?
Ideally we would like to stay in a place with a kitchen with a great view. (even better if its an apartment hotel that also serves breakfast :) ).

djp_syd Thank you for the itinerary recommendation. What other activities can we do in Granada beside the palace?
Is Gibraltar a possible trip from Ronda or is that not worth the trip?

Visit the Bull Ring in Ronda, besides the beautiful sight, there is an excellent museum. Celia Morales performs most nights in Ronda - classical Spanish guitar. The venue is small and personal. She is very approachable, but she knows very little English. Also in Ronda - 2 kind of quirky museums that have insights into Spanish culture (18th-19th century mostly) - the Wine Museum (with tastings and not just about wine production) and the BAndolera Museum.

See at least one horse show - Jerez on Thurday mid-day and/or Cordoba (Royal Stables) several evenings a week. I believe that if you arrive before the show in Jerez, you can see the horses in the paddocks.

My husband and kids are foodies. I am a vegetarian :(

There's lots of great vegetarian food in Spain. Eat lots of tapas. Seville has the best - and everyone has his/her 2 favorites. Try the salmorejo (the Andalucian version of gazpacho). It usually comes garnished with ham but you can ask for sin carne (w/o meat). If you like it, you can buy it by the carton (like fruit juices) in supermarkets.

In Ronda, the best tapas are at Bodega San Francisco. It's on the plaza across from the city gate (Gateway of Almocabar). It's a 10-15 minute walk from the bridge over the gorge. It's mostly frequented by the locals. I got there about 2 p.m. and there was hardly anyone, but by 3 p.m. it was very lively.
