Hello! Thinking of flying into Bilbao, going to San Sebastian, then Madrid - then to Portugal. That is the problem - I cannot seem to find a great way to get to Portugal! Madrid to Porto via train? Is that best? Anyone have great tips - we would like to see Northern Spain this time and then spend time in Portugal. We like to stay each destination 3 -4 days - we are traveling with kids - 13 and 15, and that seems to work best for us. Must get to Spain - Madrid, but have been to Seville twice.... Thoughts??? Tips? Thanks!!
I flew into San Sebastian from the US, it has been almost four years so I can't remember all the details, now. There was an easy, cheap short flight to Madrid from San Sebastian for the return flight to the US, maybe you can reverse that: US to Madrid, Madrid to the Basque region, then onward? I did Bilbao as a day trip from SS, it was more than enough time for several hours at the museum and a quick look at the old part of the city. There may be more to do with teenagers in San Sebastian, especially with the beach? I do remember it was an $$$ taxi but RS has info on the bus. It was one of my favorite places☺!
You might want to check Rome2rio. The site does a great job of informing you of travel options. It's really frustrating, but traveling from Spain to Portugal isn't that easy without a car. Flying may be your best option.
You don't mention a total time frame. Have you considered a journey across all of northern Spain to Santiago de Compostela ?
San Sebastian >> Bilbao >> Santander >> Oviedo >> Santiago de Compostela
Bus from Vigo, Spain to Braga, Portugal
Braga >> Porto >> Coimbra >> Lisbon
Trains from Spain to Portugal are very limited and very slow. You are better off flying in to Porto or Lisbon.
