I'm thinking of spending 3-4 days on the island of Majorca and I really don't know much about it except that the Europeans love to go there. If you have any experiences from being there please comment.
The southern coast is packed with concrete holiday resorts, where Europeans come to soak up the sun and lie by the pool. The northwest is mountainous with scenic valleys and villages. The train from Palma to Sóller is very scenic.
I visited as a port stop during a cruise 2 years ago and loved it. My wife loved her beach day and I walked around town and visited the cathedral. The forum on Cruisecritic, Mediterranean ports, has great info. There are lots of things to see and do. I will definitely go back if I have the opportunity.
I think most Europeans go for the cheap package vacations to soak up the sun and do what people do on Holiday, mostly revolving around food, drink, and nightlife.
There is a bit of history, the main town of Palma as someone mentioned is worth a walk and a few sights. We planned most of a week in Port de Pollenca, good beach, good food, rugged landscape, visited a few smaller towns in the area.
I think if you avoid the Holiday Hotel zones and maybe get to the interior, you will find a bit more culture
