You want cool on the Spanish Med coast in Summer? To me, Spain + coast + summer + cool means the northern Atlantic coast, not the Med.

I assume (and hope) you mean cool, as in trendy, rather than not hot.
You can get the high speed train from Madrid to Malaga, and Malaga to Barcelona.
Malaga is a coastal city with much of interest, incl an old centre. It also has beaches, and good beach restaurants.
There is a university, so lots of young people.

Valencia is great. Easy fast train from Madrid. I think it takes less than 3 hours.

It will be very hot everywhere but I’m sure you know that.

Costa Brava was close to Barcelona and that was a positive, but I just wasn't thrilled with Costa del Sol. To me the beach wasn't that great and the best area, near Malaga was so expensive.

Combining Barcelona with Costa Brava and Girona would be excellent.

We also love Malaga, which you could combine with Madrid.

Tossa de Mar on the Costa Brava.
Great castle-crowned town with beaches of turquoise water.
Girona is less than one hour away by car.
Cheers!

The north of Spain is wonderful. Love the Basque area, Bilbao and San Sebastian. Also, love Santiago de Compostela just north of Portugal.
