If when planning a day trip from Madrid I had to choose between Salamanca and Segovia what would be my better choice? Should I consider renting a car or using public transportation?
I'm currently dealing with the same question, only trying to decide between Toledo and Segovia, since both seem easily accessible by train, and I can only do one day trip from Madrid.
I have been to and enjoyed visiting both. I went to Segovia by train out of Chamartin train station (30 minutes) and Salamanca from Puerta de Atocha station (It took me a little longer last year, but I believe it is less than 90 minutes now). I was in Segovia just for the day, returning to Madrid after dinner. I stayed three nights in Salamanca. Segovia was a great daytrip and I may return there for a day on my October 16 trip to Spain. I really liked Salamanca as a place to relax and recharge after a busy vacation. Bottom Line: For a daytrip I would choose Segovia.
My opinion only:
- Toledo
Rather wide gap then a virtual tie:
2a. Segovia
2b. Salamanca
I stayed multiple nights in all those cities during May and June. I preferred Segovia to Salamanca, but I suspect my response was affected by external factors like weather and the relatively inconvenient location of my Salamanca hotel. The tourist area of Salamanca felt larger than Segovia's old city; it would probably keep you busy longer. It was my impression that the architecture in Segovia was more varied.
Public transportation worked fine for me.
Tough choice ... I'd probably just choose Segovia over Salamanca, just because it's closer.

Segovia has 3 big sights (aqueduct, cathedral, alcazar) which are perhaps more disparate than Salamanca's cohesive historic centre.
