Ideas for other towns on this route: Seville-Mérida-Plasencia-Salamanca-Ávila-Segovia

I arrive Granada in late April, depart Madrid 39 nites later (yes, I'm retired). Help me wander between 2 of my must-see destinations: Sevilla and Segovia. I use public transportation. Driving is NOT an option.

After a little research, I'm liking departing Seville, then 2 nights each in Mérida, Plasencia, Salamanca, Ávila, then arriving Segovia. On that route, I'm open to alternate towns and daytrip suggestions. I'm open to a route that goes through different provinces.

Why 2 nights? I love photography, so that gives me 4 opportunities around the best light of early and late in the day.

Why alternate towns? For me slow travel means staying a night in towns where I'll see few tourists because, as many put it, 'there is nothing to see there'. In such towns I'll be sampling the food, enjoying the non-city nature of the place, observing culture, and engaging with locals while speaking as little English as possible. I've been working for months to add to my decent travel Spanish in preparation for this trip. If buses are sufficiently frequent, I also like to stop in such towns for a few hours for doing those same things before moving on.

I'd like to know if you've been to such towns and recommend them. It would be wonderful if you had links to photos or words about your travels there.

I'm researching the major and minor Pueblas Blancas. I've been to Cadiz, Cordoba and Barcelona.

I second David's suggestion of Cáceres and also suggest Trujillo. Both would be on your way from Mérida to Plasencia. Very photogenic. Step back in time. Both are great for just wandering the streets. When looking for lodging check out casas rurales and hoteles con encanto in that area. Extremadura is not such a popular well known tourist destination but it is very pretty and deserves to be explored. Another pretty little town in that general area is Guadalupe. Although I liked the Roman ruins of Mérida I liked visiting Cáceres, Trujillo and Guadalupe much more. I have not been to Plasencia but it is one of the places I would like to visit. Please share your impressions when you get back.

*Thanks, all! * Guadalupe sounds amazing. Cáceres and Trujillo appeal highly. I'm planning the Extremadura leg of my trip around those three.
