Iberia Airlines - Voucher

For those keeping track - we have airline tickets for Bos to Mad in late June, returning in mid-July.

Yesterday we received an offer from Iberia to cancel the tickets in exchange for a voucher worth 110% to be used by June 30, 2021.

I'm not looking for advice. Our attitude is that if the flights are going, the hotels are open, and the restaurants/beaches (we're going to Sitges), we'll rent a car and hang out for a few weeks - better there than here. And we have friends who are keeping us up to date about the situation in and around Barcelona.

So, we wait. If Iberia cancels the flights, then we'll have no choice.

Not sure about Iberia's website posting their flight schedules, but I have a flight with TAP Air Portugal in mid-May for a pre-tour RS trip in southern Spain that isn't going to happen this year. On the TAP website, they have listed a schedule of suspended flights through May, and which flights are operating. This has been helpful to me as I wait and watch to see if they offer anything more than 1:1 value on future travel.
I can't expect a cash refund so I know I'll need to accept a voucher. You may want to scour the Iberia website to see what info they have, if you haven't already.

Thanks for the advice about checking the flights.

If Iberia cancels, it really isn't such a big deal. We've had time to make peace with the fact that Spain will be there next year when we are ready to go again.

Yes, Spain will be there. Iberia? I’m not sure. I personally would avoid any voucher from any carrier in such a threatened industry.

This is a very good point. If I get a voucher and the airlines files for bankruptcy protection, I understand my voucher will not be worth anything. So, I'll wait until the flight is cancelled and take my money, even if I end up spending it on another Iberia flight next year.

Update: the flights for June 22 and the return on July 17 were cancelled today by Iberia. We requested a refund and we were told it may take up to 5 months for the refund. Ugh. We work all year so that we can take a long vacation in our favorite place on earth - Spain.

Jen,
we received an email informing us of the cancellation. We opted for the refund, but have yet to receive a confirmation notification (after three days -- will wait a while longer).

Iberia processed the refunds and they were credited to us very quickly. Thanks everyone!

Hi everyone. I have been trying to use my Iberia voucher without success. I have called Iberia twice with no success. When I try to insert it, a message pops up saying it is only valid on certain airlines, etc. ( I am only trying to book on the original Iberia site). Is there a way to request a refund and request a cancellation? I would greatly appreciate any advice and tips. I am beginning to feel worried I will loose my money.

Companies and tour operators tend to offer a voucher instead of a refund... but know that in the EU it's your right to have a refund if you prefer it. This is why companies will sometimes make the voucher offer more attractive offering a 110% of the original value or other perks. Still, their first obligation when cancelling is to refund.

For info: https://ec.europa.eu/transport/themes/passengers/news/2020-03-18-covid-19-guidance-eu-passenger-rights_en Clarification: this applies to ALL companies serving any EU destination, including any non-EU company flying "from" (not "to"!) an EU airport.

For complaints: https://europa.eu/youreurope/citizens/travel/passenger-rights/air/index_en.htm

Still, be prepared for a long (and sometimes exhausting) claim process.
