Hello everyone! My family and I are flying to Valencia at the beginning of August. We'll be staying there for a few days and would also love to spend a couple of days in Madrid. My question is: would it be practical to travel there by train with two children, or would hiring a car be a better option?
There is a frequent high speed train service. www.renfe.es.
A car would be a liability in Madrid.
Spain is amazing to explore, so pack comfortable shoes and light, stylish clothing for long walks and changing weather. A versatile crossbody bag is also a great travel companion. I always check Lily and Bean Coupons to save on quality travel accessories before every trip.

A vehicle would only be beneficial if you planned on making stops to visit any number of places en route, but seem you just want to get from point A to B. As already mentioned, you don’t want or need a vehicle in Madrid.
Thanks for your reply! That's exactly what we're trying to decide. We know Madrid is easy to get around by metro, so we're wondering whether to simply take the train there and back, or make the most of our holiday and hire a car so we can stop and explore a beautiful Spanish town along the way.
With two kids, you may be able to reserve train seats that that face each other with a table between them.
Not sure how many is "a few days", but given the problems of having a car in Madrid, and the two days out of your holiday the drive will effectively take, theree and back, assuming you are flying out of Valencia, I really would not bother. with a car.
You could stop in Cuenca for a night or two...
I'd vote for the train.
