Hi folks,
I will be staying at an Airbnb in Barcelona for five nights, and the host is requiring that I register my ID and pay the Barcelona city tax prior to check-in. Does anyone have the link to accomplish this? I've done several online searches, and cannot seem to find the right form.
Thank you!
The tourist tax in Barcelona for Airbnb accommodations is paid as follows:
1. Direct payment to the host/owner
This is the most common method
The owner will collect it in cash when you arrive
Usually paid at check-in time
2. Through the Airbnb platform
Some hosts have enabled automatic collection
It's charged to the same card you used for the booking
Appears as a separate charge
3. Bank transfer in advance
Some hosts request payment beforehand
They'll provide banking details before your arrival
The last one, probably the less common, works as follows:
Host initiates contact: After your booking is confirmed, the host will message you (usually through Airbnb messaging)
They'll inform you about the tourist tax and their preference for advance paymentBanking details provided: Host sends you their bank account details (IBAN, account holder name) They'll specify the exact amount based on your group size and nights May include a reference number or booking ID for the transfer
You make the transfer: Use your bank's online banking, mobile app... Transfer the exact amount calculated Include the reference they provided in the transfer description
Confirmation: Send proof of transfer to the host (screenshot or receipt) Host confirms receipt before your arrival
Example calculation:
2 adults × 4 nights × tourist tax
Reference: "Tourist tax - [Your name] - [Check-in date]"
Regarding the amount of the tourist tax, I strongly recommend asking your host directly, as the rate has changed several times in recent years and some of the increases have even been challenged in court, so I can’t say which one currently applies (moreover I don't work in this industry!).
Why some hosts might prefer this method:
- No need to handle cash at check-in
- Smoother arrival process
- Guaranteed payment before the guest arrives
- Better record-keeping for tax purposes
Timeline:
Usually requested 1-2 weeks before arrival
Some hosts ask for it immediately after booking confirmation
Transfer should be completed at least 2-3 days before check-in
Note that you are paying this tax to the City coffers; the Airbnb host just acts as an intermediary, collecting and processing your tax for you.
Does anyone have the link to accomplish this?
Your Spain AirBnb host should send you the required link (probably a "guest.chekin.com” link).
You make the transfer: Use your bank's online banking, mobile app.
However, we Americans do not have such apps on our phones that can handle currency exchange. As such, you will need to open an account at Wise and transfer funds with that.
Thank you all for the very helpful information! I appreciate your quick replies.
