We will be leaving a villa in Mallorca and rather than attempt the long drive to Rome, think perhaps we should fly. Is this the best option? Would love to hear your comments on the mode of travel if we don't want to spend an entire day or more driving.
I'm totally confused. Mallorca is an island. How would you drive from there to Rome? I suppose you mean renting a car and taking the ferry to the mainland, then the loooooong drive to Rome. Do the rental companies allow their cars on the ferry? And if so, just how big is the drop off fee to leave the vehicle in Italy ? (Assuming you aren't making the loooooong drive back to Spain.
Flights are available with a single stop that take less than 5 hours. Seems like a no brainer to me.
Ryan Air has non-stop flights from Mallorca to Rome. If you wanted to drive you could fly to Barcelona and drive through the French Rivera, but this would be a very long (if it's even possible to do in 12-14 hrs). Trip.
Barcelona to Rome is ~850 miles ( ~1400km). google estimates travel at 14 hrs. Rather optimistic in my view that one would be able to average 60 mph ( 100kph) the entire trip. (Must assume aerial refueling and diapers)

Yes, flying is the better option, if you want to limit your travel time to one day.
Fly, there really is no viable alternative.
