How to connect the locations

We will be traveling from Budapest on April 17th and want to visit Bilbao, Altamira, Madrid and Picos de Europa in Spain and also Porto in Portugal.

The tour we are taking in Picos de Europa will pick us up in Santander on May 4th and we will head home (San Diego) after that trip. We would be willing to spend a day or two after the tour in one location to fly home from. Madrid maybe? Porto? Santander?

While traveling between locations we prefer to take public transport so we can avoid car rentals.

The logistics are making me crazy and will appreciate any advice you might have.

Thanks!
Jackie

The outlier is Porto. It is far from all the other places you mentioned. The time it would take to get there might better be used in the part of Spain the other locations are in.

Madrid will be easy to get to from Santander. Porto will be nearly impossible to reach in a single day by public transport...unless you fly via Madrid I guess.

I would not visit Altamira. It´s a replica and a museum, called "neocueva", there are far better real caves in the area, such as Las Monedas and El Castillo.

Thank you for such prompt replies. I will look into the other caves mentioned - also will consider flying from Madrid to Porto and home from there. I may be possible to take an earlier tour of the Picos de Europa. Possible flights from Santander to Porto?
Thanks!
