I have planned a trip through Spain with 5 family members. We are all well traveled but getting up there in years. Along with the usual trains and buses I would like to use private car and drivers or share taxis between some cities. Are there agencies that provide this service or can it be arranged from from the departing city?
Private Drivers / Taxis between cities could get very pricey. You could always ask your hotel for guidance as a first step.
What distance(s) are you considering to travel by private driver/taxi? We (my wife and I) did just this on a recent visit to the West Highlands. The cost was approximately GBP 35/hour. In our case the driver had about an hour "dead head" to either pick us up, or return to her/his base of operations. That time was paid at the noted hourly rate in addition to the time we were being transported. Please understand this was our experience and we have no idea what the cost may be in other parts of the world. Also to be considered, if there are five of you and if you travel with more than one piece of luggage each, accommodating the luggage could be problematic.
To receive more usable information on this forum, you may want to note the various "trips" you desire to make this way. You may want to note the following:
- From where to where?
- What day(s) of the week?
- What time of day do you want to travel?
- Do you desire the driver to stop to permit you to visit venues along the way (for how long)?
Good advice...thank you. The trips I would be most interested in are between Gibraltar/La Linea to Granada, and Granada to Madrid. I’m sure for 5 people with medium sizes luggage we would have to have a van. I was wondering if this is something we could arrange as we go or would need to be pre-booked.
You might want to check this internet site enter link description here. I also went to www.rome2rio.com to check travel time by car and it looks like around 3-1/2 hours from Gibraltar to Granada. Using the rates note on the referenced site, it would be GBP 90 for the first hour then GBP 60 for the next 3 hours or portion thereof. The "deadhead" cost could be another GBP 180 or so.
NOT including the possible "deadhead" cost, the total would be GBP 270 or around US$ 358. This is approximately US$ 71/pp. More costly than a bus or train, but you wouldn't have the headache of handling luggage. This is only hypothetical and not ample information on which to make a decision, and the result of only a "first pass", but it may give you some idea of what you're dealing with.
That post is very helpful. That estimated price is definitely doable. Over 40 years we have gradually transitioned from backpackers to more comfortable independent travel. Luxury isn’t important but convinence is nice. Thanks.
One other quick question. Is the currency quoted on the rome2rio site in Japanese yen? Thanks.
Just change tbe currancy to the one you want. Think its in settings
Just to mention: in some (more rural) areas the only available means of "private" transportation is taxi... and taxis might or might not be willing to take on a long journey. Saying so because you could encounter a driver saying he won't take you beyond X miles from the origin.
Enric’s comment is an important one. The information I posted was meant to be an exemplar of just one quick look-see of what’s available on the internet.
I have recently used Mydaytrip.com for three drives within Central Europe and would highly recommend them. All the drivers speak good to fluent English and they will stop along the way for sightseeing for a small additional charge. The service is expensive though in line with other private transfer services I found. Generally, it becomes increasingly more affordable and convenient option as you have more passengers. You can indicate the no of passengers and luggage and it will give you an instant quote. They also have a nice feature that suggests places to stop and estimated times on the way to your destination.
Thanks for the tip on mydaytrip. I’ll check them out.
