How much time should I plan for the Dali museum in Figueres?

How much time should a Dali fan allow to properly see the Dali museum in Figueres? I need to know so I can decide what time to make a reservation for a tour of the Dali house in Port Lligat later the same day. I plan on arriving at the Dali museum by rental car around the time it opens at 9:00 and driving to the Dali house afterwards. I want to allow plenty of time to see the Dali museum, and I can be flexible with lunch-- quickly eating a packed lunch or having a leisurely lunch if I have extra time-- but I don't want to schedule too much time in between since I'd like to drive as far up the coast as I can towards destinations in France afterwards.

It seems we spent about 3 hours there. It does get pretty crowded so go early. You can purchase tickets ahead of time on the museum website

I think I spent no more than 2 hours. There is certainly a lot to see and you can spend quite a bit of time if you are a big fan. Allow for an hour and half to drive to Cadaques, where you could have a nice lunch along the harbor. Port Illgat is just a 15 minute drive from there. Also be sure to drive out to Caps de Creus, which is the landscape that heavily inspired Dali. A mid to late afternoon ticket for the house will work fine.

You should be aware that Cadaques is a 45 minute drive over the mountains. Very beautiful, but time consuming.

There is a convenient parking garage in Figueres right next to the museum (plenty of signs). Parking for Cadaques is in a remote lot on the edge of town (easy 5 minute walk to the harbor). Parking for Port Illgat is right at the site.

We were there for about 3 hours this past November and didn't quite see everything, but had to leave so we could catch the last entry of the day at the house in Port Llegat. We spent about 2 minutes at the Dali Jewels exhibit on our way back to the car, and picked up sandwiches along the way to eat in the car. We just made it in time to the Dali/Gala house, without stopping in Cadaques.

The museum in Figueres has its back to the parking garage, so you have to walk to the opposite side of the musem to get to the entrance. Walk around to the left to get to the entrance; going to the right takes you past the separate entrance for the Dali jewels, but not to the ticket window/entrance to the museum, and it's a much longer walk.

The drive to Port Llegat includes a twisty, narrow mountain road that wasn't super busy in November; you might experience heavier traffic at other times of the year. Even so, be wary of other drivers passing on blind curves - surreal!

My wife and I just got back last week. We started in Figueres/Cadaques and for my money and time I found the Dali house in Portlligat well worth the overnight stay we spent in cadaques. We both found the museum in Figueres to be a disappointment after being thoroughly enchanted by the house and Portlligat. We were in Spain/France for 3 weeks though so we had plenty of time. Don't cut your time short for the Dali house the guides are excellent and knowledgable and the village/town itself is enchanting.
Going north into France I can't really recommend Collieure or Carcassonne. Collieure is a party town and Carcassonne is total Disney kitch. We spent three nights in Cucugnan at Ecurie, an excelent B&B. The views and the local countryside makes for a great stay and the castles are well worth the effort as are the local wineries. We bought some bread at the local bakery that still uses the town windmill, some fresh tome, a bottle of wine from the winery and a kilo! of fresh RIPE apricots (2.50 euro) !!! and had a great 2 days worth of lunches.
Driving: for us we found a GPS to be an absolute life saver especially as you pass through the many small towns on the backroads.

I will agree with Ronald, above. The house was the more interesting of the two for me. Too much Dali will overload you quickly...and that was what I had at the museum. The house, the location directly on the water, the quirky interior and gardens..all were much more pleasing to me. Enjoy!!!

I too enjoyed the house more, but these are not hints to skip the museum. It is well worth it.
