Thinking of doing a quick turnaround from Granada. After looking at the bus schedules the shortest turnaround option gives us about 3.5 hours in town. The other option would give us 5 hours in town. We don't necessarily want to go into the water, but want to check out one beach town in Spain and go to the popular paella place for lunch. Is it worth it?
We enjoyed Nerja very much. U could easily walkabout, have lunch at beach paella restaurant and take great pics in 3.5 hrs. Nerja is worth your detour.
Enjoy.
Hi Gabriel,
We don't necessarily want to go into the water, but want to check out one beach town in Spain and go to the popular paella place for lunch. Is it worth it?
I've not traveled to Nerja (yet), but we did enjoy our time in Granada.
I personally don't like taking day trips that require traveling more than 1 - 1.5 hour each way.
Granada to Nerja would take about 2 hours, 15 minutes each way (via bus), so that's 4.5 hours of travel time.
I remember from a previous post that you'll be traveling with your parents, right?
Do you think your parents are up to being in a bus for 4.5 hours, in order to only spend 3.5 - 5 hours at a beach town?
I've traveled with my elderly mom & she would find this day trip very exhausting, so it would not be worth it for us.
Another option... You could rent a car & drive to Nerja...
I thought you were going to Barcelona?
If you think the trip is worth it, then you will probably like Nerja. We spent three days there, we would not go back. It was nice to see, but we wish we would have had just 5 hours there instead of three days. We are not beach people at all.
I agree with Priscilla, that it's a long way to go for just a day. Her other question is very pertinent - what is the rest of your itinerary? Is there somewhere else more conducive to a side trip to a beach town? As she implied, Barcelona has its own beaches, as well as being near beach towns like Sitges (less than an hour from Barcelona, so much more suitable as a daytrip).
I like Nerja and found it a nice day trip from Granada, but I had a car. In 3.5 hours you can walk along the beach, eat paella, and see the balcony of Europe. I'd say 3.5 is fine. If you want to lay on the beach and swim, go for the 5.
We spent four nights in Nerja in May and considered it our vacation from our 30 night vacation in Spain and Portugal. We used a car to get to the caves and Frigiliana. The paella at Ayo's is good, but what you describe is, in my opinion, not worth it. The Balcony of Europe is a ways from the bus stop, and the beach restaurant is a lengthy walk from there. I'm sure you can find good paella in other places. Have a great trip!
We day tripped from Grenada to Nerja and it took about 1.5 hours by car, enjoyed the Balcony of Europe for the views and restaurants, also the scenery along the Mediteranean Sea on the ride in and out.

Thanks all. We are still weighing options and will decide once we're in Granada if we decide to check out the beach. I remember checking out cars but they were too expensive and I don't drive manual. This would be our only shot at checking out the coastline as our time in Barcelona will be very short. My parents are not fragile and would not mind the travel time at all.
