From another forum, it appears that the earliest I can purchase train tickets is 90 days before the trip. Is that accurate?

Generally 90 days is accurate. I don't think it is exact - I'd look at maybe 100 days, see what's posted, then again at 90, and if your dates aren't there just keep checking. Sometimes they are delayed because of schedule changes, sometimes its set early.
If you know your dates and are confident you won't need to make changes then buying early can get you the best fares. Most trains won't sell out, and if they do it won't be much ahead of time, unless it's a holiday. So you can wait, but the sale fares will be gone and you will pay full price.
Example - Madrid to Seville tomorrow morning is 76euros and a few trains are sold out,
May 23 the same train is 47euros and nothing is sold out
in June only a few trains are posted, I'm sure more will be added once schedules are set

I would say 30 days would be fine. I buy mine as I need them, and usually only a few days in advance and have never had a problem, but then I haven't been in Spain in July or August.
