Well it may depend on what you choose for the in-between portion, but I would think you would want at least three nights in each to have two full days to explore.
Is this the part where you want beach? Maybe you could go from Madrid to Valencia and then travel up the coast to Barcelona by car for a week--pick what appeals to you for stops.

I would want 4 or 5 nights in Barcelona. There is so much to see here, especially the Gaudi sites, and they all require advance tickets. And Barcelona has a beach, too, which you might be interested in since it's summer. Girona is another wonderful place to visit north of Barcelona. And Costa Brava would be an awesome choice for hopefully a little bit cooler weather.

Is Madrid your first stop? You will then need to get over jetlag, so perhaps 3 or 4 nights in Madrid. Madrid has some outstanding art museums, Retiro Park, markets, and the Royal Palace.

I suggest four days each (minimum) in Madrid and Barcelona.

From Madrid, you MUST see Toledo, it is amazing. Do a day trip. Also, do a day trip to Segovia, which has a 1800 year old intact Roman aqueduct.

You are ignoring a very special place, Seville, which is south of Madrid. Not sure you have time, but consider it.

It depends on what you want to see and do in each city. Make a list and guess at how much time you think you’ll spend at each place. That should give you an idea of how many days you’ll need. Assume you’ll spend longer at some places than anticipated and less at others. Allot some time for things you didn’t anticipate seeing.

Places some feel are worth a day at most, others will say are worth three days.
