How long in each? Transporation options

Due to a change in travel plans and a cancelled flight I am now looking at Spain for 7-10 days in November. My arrival date is fixed or closed to fixed as I am ending a tour in Porto of Nov 6.

I am thinking of either flying to Madrid Nov 6 or 7. A flight seems by far the best option.

Love museums, chruches and historical sites. Want to base myself out of Madrid and Barcelona. I have been to both but it was years ago (about 15 or so) and I was still new to travelling on my own in Europe and did not explore either city as I do now.

If you had 10 days including travel day between Madrid and Barcelona but not including the day of my flight to Toronto would how would you split your time. This is the end of two months of travelling I leave Toronto Sept. 7 so not looking to move around to different locations. I am thinking 5 nights in each but any special reason you would recommend one over the other.

Half and half would be my impulse unless you identify specific places in either that supports giving one more time. Assuming you fly home from there, so have you checked if you could fly into BCN and out of MAD to save one trip between them?

Flying home is about the same cost from either Madrid or Barcelona. Both flights stop in Lisbon and it is the same flight to Toronto.
I have not yet spent a lot of time looking at flight from Porto to either city so I will do that, flight to Madrid seem to go often. I assume it is the same to Barcelona.

Wendy, I'd split the time evenly, as you're considering. Then I'd suggest planning 4 days in each city and a day trip—a leisurely for seeing each city's sights while wandering, meandering, and drinking in the non-sights.
