How easy is it to accomodate gluten free meals (for medical reasons) on RS tours in Spain

Will be traveling to Spain next year with RS. I realize the FAQ notes that meals for medical concerns (gluten free) may not always be easily accommodated or guaranteed on his meal plan; but, was wondering about personal experiences of seasoned RS travelers. Responses would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Jamev, I am a celiac, so must eat GF. I am going on my 5th RS tour this fall, I am going on the Best of Spain. I have not been to Spain before so can cannot address that country specifically yet but have experience with the tours.

The guides are excellent at ensuring a strict GF diet. One guide bought me some rice cakes so I could enjoy cheese with it. Each time I did give the guide a Celiac travel info card (celiactravel.com has free wallet sized cards to print in many languages). I provide a English and local language card info with the dietary requirements at the first group meeting. I always have a number of those cards with me when eating out on my own.

Now I am a bit more experienced with European travel as a celiac, I google gluten free products in the cities I will be, or google natural food stores to find some GF products while on your trip. Schar has a great bread, I think it is called Compagnie in French, 5-6 slices in a pack. I always bring ziplock bags with me to keep them in. For the plane trip, I put GF crackers in a plastic yogurt container with an elastic band or 2 to keep it secure. On one trip, I kept the empty container for the whole trip to refill with GF crackers or cookies I found. I also google gf restaurants where I am going for the free time.

I recently found mytable.com to search GF restaurants that have GF options. Glutenfreebcn.com looks intersting too for Barcelona.

Enjoy your trip.
