We're ending our Basque Tour with RS on Oct 8th. We've decided to fly to madrid that afternoon. Rome2Rio shows flights using Iberia Air and Air Europa. Air Europa seems to have more choices. Its only an hour flight, does it matter which airline? How far in advanced. We're approaching our the 30 day out mark.

Before booking a flight, look into a train or bus. Neither would take much longer. While the flight is only an hour, you still need get to, and be at, the airport early.
If still deciding to fly, check out how frequently the different airlines’ flights depart on time. That might help you decide, but you should book fairly soon.

Book it now. There is no difference between the airlines and the schedule is pretty frequent. If you are part of an airline alliance credit card mileage program check to see if you can save by book with points.

Thanks for the input. Yes I'm booking now. While Iberia is more expensive, the perks are better for the price and we can do 1 free change if we decide to stay in Bilbao longer. The train times to Madrid are very limited and not interested in the time on a bus. The flight is only 1 hr and since we have carry on and the Bilbao airport is small. We can get into Madrid at a reasonable time (options are 7am or 5 pm) and its a 3.5 hr ride. We can fly mid day or if we need extra time can fly in the early evening and still get there in time for dinner.
