I'm looking for well-located, mid-range (2-4 stars/$$-$$$) hotels in these cities. Perhaps Eixample area in Barcelona. In Madrid, I'm having trouble finding availability the second week of October! Wondering if there is some event happening! Would love to stay in Chueca area or thereabouts in Madrid. Is Atocha area too removed in order to get around to Madrid sites primarily on foot? And Sevilla and Granada?
Madrid has the big Fiesta Nacional de España, bog national holiday, parades, etc in mid October.
In April, in Barcelona, we stayed at Hotel Lloret Ramblas.
It is half a block 'south' on the Ramblas and was good. I reviewed it at Trip Advisor.
In Madrid and Sevilla we stayed at Airbnb. Don't rule them out.
In Mardrid we were near the Anton Martin metro station. Very easy to walk everywhere.
In Seville, it really depends on what you're seeing. We were just east of the Bull Ring and found it easy enough walking.
The walk from the Reina Sofia museum across the street from Atocha station to the Plaza Mayor is about 15-20 minutes, or about a mile. Doeable if you didn’t have to make it too often. In Madrid we stay at Hotel Europa. On our last visit to Sevilla, we stayed at hotel Amadeus near the cathedral, and in Barcelona we stayed at Hotel Balmes a few blocks from Casa Mila and Casa Batlo.
We were in Madrid, Barcelona and Seville in October 2017, and I have to say our hotels were all great.
In Madrid, we walked everywhere except to the Royal Palace. We stayed at the Artrip, which is an easy walk to/from Atocha.
In Barcelona, we stayed at the U232 in the Eixample. Again, we walked everywhere except to Park Guell.
Our favorite hotel was our choice for Seville - the Becquer. Perfect location for walkers.
Stayed in Spain last September to early October. Here are the hotels we enjoyed and some feedback on the ones we stayed at, but wouldn't again.
Barcelona: My husband and I loved Hotel Midmost: https://www.hotelmidmost.com/en. A 3-minute walk from Universitat metro station, a 6-minute stroll from the bustling Plaça de Catalunya you are close to the action, but not in the middle of the Ramblas. What we especially liked about the excellent service, rooftop deck with small pool & bar, and a exceptional organic, local breakfast. Our room had a patio as well. We felt like we were in a luxury hotel with all the amenities, but still had the Catalonian feel.
Madrid: We stayed in two hotels. Doubletree on points (directly across from the Prado). The hotel was a typical Doubletree, nothing special, but I really liked the location. We also stayed at Hotel Europa which is in the heart Puerta del Sol and right next to a metro, so very convenient. The hotel itself was really basic, served breakfast, but it was really basic and in the backroom of the attached restaurant. If you want a place to lay down your head in a busy plaza, then Hotel Europa fit the bill. When I go back to Madrid, I personally wouldn't stay there again.
Seville: We stayed at the El Rey Moro: http://www.elreymoro.com/ in a junior suite. Loved the location in Santa Cruz Bario, the outdoor atrium was very relaxing, cool, and a great place to read or to have a cocktail. The service there was mixed. They did help us book some tickets, but refused to help book some train tickets until I told them that every other hotel helped us and then they helped. That said, I liked the place enough that I would consider it on my next trip back.
