Hotel reservations off season

Hello all, I’m planning a two week road trip in Northern or Southern Spain in 3rd week of April ‘23, a week after Easter. I want to be as flexible as possible and wondering if I can make hotel reservations as I go. Are advanced reservations a must during April?
Thanks!
Jim

I wouldn’t think of April as off season, low enough to just decide as you go most any place.

If you’re truly flexible, don’t care much about where you stay maybe you can?

Depends on where in northern or southern Spain you Intend to go since they cover a large area. Generally, in late April, if you’re going to be visiting larger cities or towns you should be fine reserving as you go. Where you could run into issues would be if you planned on visiting smaller towns along the coast that haven’t opened up yet for the tourist season. In those places, lodging options could be limited.

Thanks so much! Three great replies! Looks like I need to plan to be more specific on itineraries.

We travel most of the time without reservations even at peak time. Just use one or two of the hotel apps and reserve maybe a day or two in advance. Haven't slept in a train station yet. Do need to be a little bit flexible but at that time of year you will be fine.

Be careful. During Easter Seville will effectively be high season just like Mardi Gras in New Orleans.

But outside of Sevilla it will be low - mid season in the South and very low season in the North.

Outside of Sevilla you can just wing reservations that time of year. Rates can be very low compared to summer rates.

Now with high season it is mandatory to reserve in advance

Rates are better if you book ahead; last minute booking is more expensive. If you want flexibility, just book hotels which allow you to cancel up to one day before.

I agree about rates being better if you book ahead. We are finding that current rates are almost double what they were when we first reserved 9 months ago.

It depends on how particular you are (accommodation is a huge deal for me), but I would anticipate a big difference between northern and southern Spain (and what you mean by those). My educated guess is that it could potentially be a problem in Andalucia and not much of an issue in Asturias.
I like Booking.com and their app is user friendly.
