Hi everyone, planning our 2026 spring trip to Europe which will include 3 weeks in Spain (Andalusia focus). Ending the trip with 3 nights in Barcelona. Having challenges finding an affordable hotel near Placa Catalonia (heard that this area is easier for transportation and walking to main sites) for 2 adults (artist daughter and I again), late May. I see others have recommended H10 options; we’re considering H10 Montcada (a bit further from Placa Catalonia, some reviews online suggest security concerns with staying in Gothic area?) or Uriquianaona (closer but a bit higher priced). Overall Barcelona is expensive compared to literally everywhere else in Spain, ouch. Any hotel reviews or suggestions for two women in central Barcelona (without having to sell a kidney!) are much appreciated! Thx Maria
Mariart, Catalonia hotels are running a special right now; I just pretend-booked three nights at the Catalonia Portal de l'Angel for next April; the least expensive double was about 160 euros per night. I don't think that included breakfast.
We spent about 5 nights at the Portal De l'Angel in September, before and during a Rick Steves tour, and enjoyed it very much. The rooms were fine, clean with a/c, elevators; we paid for the breakfast before the tour, and for us, it was worth it. (They have a great breakfast buffet, and I like a hearty breakfast when traveling.) There are also a couple of bakeries within a 5 - 10 minute walk that would be great for breakfast or lunch.
Catalonia has a surprising number of hotels in Barcelona, several of them very close to Place Catalonia. Check out their website; the price I was quoted was significantly below the price listed on the hotel's calendar with "as low as" prices.
We haven't tried the other Catalonia hotels in Barcelona, but we would gladly stay at the Portal de l'Angel again.
Our adult daughter and son stayed at Portal de l'Angel a few years ago and liked it so much that a few weeks ago I booked it for 5 nights in June for my husband and myself via Booking.com. Thanks to Jane's tip about Catalonia's sale, I was able to score a much better rate with breakfast included to boot. Have a wonderful trip, Maria and many thanks to Jane.
Thx Jane and Adrienne for your information on Catalonia Portal de l’Angel, I checked the website too and it’s certainly cheaper with Black Friday sales. It’s a definite contender, and knowing that it has great reviews helps me a lot, thx so much. This is still a bit higher than I hoped though at about $500 Canadian per night (this might be normal for central Barcelona in high season, I’m just comparing to the other Spanish cities including pricey Madrid and Barcelona is much more expensive than realized ...). The Praktik chain and some of the H10 options have lower rates and I also saw a hotel called Continental that is cheaper (and has an all day buffet which daughter would love I’m sure). Just wondering if anyone has stayed in any of these hotels ? Sorry I should have posted earlier that my budget is around 200 euros per night, which is admittedly low…thx again. Maria
I stayed right on Plaça de Catalunya at the 45 Times Barcelona Hotel when it was called Iberostar. It’s a pretty good hotel, the location is perfect, and the view from the rooftop pool bar over the plaza and the city is fantastic.
We just got back on Wed from 6 nights in Barcelona. We stayed at the Hotel Praktik Garden in L'Eixample. It was a lower star (2 stars) than what we usual stay at, but it worked well for us. Location was great. Room was clean and we had one with a large balcony. It was small, but we weren't in there much. They offered free coffee and small pastries for breakfast, which was perfect. I booked online directly through them and received a 10% discount.
Thx Marco and AnnieD for your recommendations. I’ll check these hotels out. Still browsing the Black Friday deals online too…thx everyone for your suggestions !
In 2023, i stayed at the Hotel Reding Croma, which is a 5 minute walk from Placa Catalunya. This Placa is a transit hub for the airport shuttle and is easily walkable (or via a nearby Metro station) to the main Barcelona sights. A renovated hotel that is also close to restaurants and an Aldi supermarket. I enjoyed my stay there.
