We're driving from Bilbao to the Dordogne, spending about 4 or 5 days driving through the Basque country. We arranged hotels in Bilbao, then Getaria, and for our last night, we'll stay in Bayonne. We were hoping to stay in or near what sounds like the charming village of Pasai Donibane, but can't find any hotels or lodging near there. Hondarribia looks like a possibility. Does anyone have any experience there? We're staying in cities the first and last night, and wanted to stay in smaller places for the 2nd and 3rd nights. Thoughts?
The town is very small and with very limited access to cars. I recommend to search in Hondarribia, but as distances are so short Getaria makes a great point to visit Pasai Donibane (again, complicated to park...)...best option is to cross on the boat from Pasai San Pedro.
We stayed at the Parador in Hondarrbia and enjoyed it. It’s in a Los castle and is pricey. It does offer paid parking, but the lot can get crowded if you arrive late. In Bayonne we stayed at the more budget friendly ibis Styles Bayonne Centre Gare. Its location is great. There’s limited parking right at the hotel, but there’s more parking at the nearby train station.
