Has anyone stayed at a hotel close to the Barcelona airport, preferably with a shuttle , although we could take a taxi? Looking for a place to stay the night before we leave to return to the US. We will be coming from Girona. Thanks!

Not worth it, really, given the airport is merely 12 km from the city, I'd stay in Barcelona and take a taxi/train/bus in the morning. I'd probably check a hotel near the station you'll be arriving at from Girona (Estació de Sants). There are plenty to choose from, whether around the airport, the choice is limited -and they're in a sort of doggy area as well.

Surely stay in the city!
If you MUST stay near the airport, the flight crews from Delta stay at the Novotel, so I imagine that's pretty nice.

My advice - Your Barcelona hotel will arrange an early taxi that will whisk you through lightly traffic'd roads to your flight. You'll lose maybe 10-15 minutes in the morning and have an infinitely more interesting stay.
