Hotel for 1 night in Madrid (4 people)?

We are arriving in Madrid (from the west coast) around 5:30 on a Thursday evening in November. The next day we are taking a 2:35 pm train to Granada. Looking for recommendations for a hotel. Well be taking a taxi from the airport. We want to stay in an area with restaurants nearby, and interesting areas to explore Thurs night and Friday morning before leaving around 1:00 for the train station. Not really interested in museums or palaces that morning, just wandering, absorbing the ambience and having a late breakfast/lunch. Budget is 200€ or less.

I realize this is not enough time to “see” Madrid. Well save that for another trip.

That train leaves from the Atocha station. One hotel often recommended, and one I’ve used a couple times in Madrid, is Hotel Europa at the Puerta del Sol. It’s about a 20 minutes walk from the train station, or a short metro ride. There are hotels near the train station that may be more suitable to your needs. A couple are AC Hotel Carlton and AC Hotel Atocha. Both appear to be owned by Marriott and only a couple blocks from the station. On an upcoming trip to Madrid, we’ll be staying at Hotel Petit Palace Posada del Peine between the Puerta del Sol and Plaza Mayor.

Another vote for Hotel Europa! We stayed there several years ago. Great vibe in Puerta del Sol! We stayed on an upper floor with a balcony. The balcony doors blocked out the sound of the plaza.. It would check your boxes for central location to explore the area. Restaurants in walking distance, and great for wandering the the nearby plazas. Our favorite charming restaurant was a 10 min. walk to the Huertas Neighborhood. (La Sanabresa). Reasonably priced. We ate their twice and had their Pre Fixe menu that included 3 courses. This included dessert and wine. It's popular with the locals. We arrived at the evening opening time (8:30 pm) and did not have to wait for a table. Also open for lunch. Calle del Armor de Dios, 12, 28014 Madrid.

Consider the Hotel Paseo del Arte along calle de Atocha past the big roundabout -- it's much closer to the train station than the Europa, has nicer rooms, yet is not right on top of the traffic mess around the station. Join the chain club and like with the Marriott you will get good offers for their other properties in Europe.

From there you can either walk in the park and enjoy the book and knickknack stalls,
or if you're feeling urban-adventure-y you can walk to Lavapies or the university area. Plenty of cafes and bakeries on that side (the west side) that aren't too touristy, although be aware that there are a lot of junky shops and fast-food around there, too.

If you were interested in museums, I'd point you to the upstairs cafe at the CaixaForum (nice bookstore, too) but if you're not into museums then stay clear of it and the Prado, because everything else near them is uber-touristy.

I have mostly stayed at the Meliá Madrid Princesa, when I'm in town, it's a solid business class hotel but very reasonably priced for its quality. They have the best scrambled eggs I ever ate for breakfast, i dont know how they do it. It’s right next to the Plaza de España and the Temple of Debod park, so a nice area to walk around and people watch :)
