Hotel Europa or Hotel Moderno in Madrid?

Both of these hotels are recommended by RS and I've read lots of reviews but thought I'd get a few more opinions before booking. If you stayed and had a room with a view a terrace, was it worth the extra money? Do you know if the included taxi is just a shuttle service? If there are other hotels this centrally located and in the same price range, I'll look at those, too. Thanks for your feedback.

We spent four nights at Hotel Europa several years ago based on positive reviews from friends. We appreciated the central location & upper floor room with terrace. We loved the vibe of Puerta del Sol. The upper floor room was quiet at night. The room was spotless and comfortable. The major Square and sites were about 10 minutes away. I can't speak to the included taxi. We caught a taxi from the airport.

My son and I stayed in separate rooms at the Moderno in May and were happy with the choice. Rooms were surprisingly quiet for the location. We took the lowest price option.

We enjoyed having a simple, Spanish style breakfast at the long bar at the Europa each of the 5 days we were in Madrid.

Have stayed at Hotel Europa twice and we enjoyed our stay both times. Both times, our rooms overlooked the street in front so we could watch the activities in the Puerta del Sol. We were unimpressed by the breakfast, so unless it is included in the price, I’d go somewhere else for it. On both occasions we used the metro.

I had the same choice for my trip next month, and compared both hotels on their websites. I chose the Moderno because its website showed considerably larger room sizes than the Europa's, for what seemed to be otherwise comparable rooms. I'll find out later this fall whether that was a good choice, but for me it seemed like a good tie-breaker.

Thanks for your comments everyone.

to Dick - I'm curious which rooms you checked as when I compared double rooms at both hotels , they were the same size (150 sqm). I booked the Moderno, too, and hope it's a good choice. Best wishes on your travels! We aren't as excited about the hotels in Spain as we were in Italy, France, and Switzerland, where we found some gems at reasonable prices.
