Has anyone ever stayed at Hotel America? How is it and is it noisy being that close to Alhambra?
We stayed there one night when we first arrived at Granada (then we moved to a carmen nearby).. It was 7 years ago, but I do not recall any noise issues. We had a room overlooking the courtyard dining area, accessed by a tight spiral staircase---not good if you have mobility issues. I think they waited to get a look at us before assigning us to that room. We had a night visit to the Nasrid Palaces that evening, and by the time we returned the dining area was closed and it was quiet.
We thought the room was a bit small, but sweet, and the staff was friendly. We ate lunch in the patio twice, as it was so convenient, and the food was decent.
We stayed there for a few nights in September 2014. I don’t recall much noise, but we weren’t in the room very much. It is a basic no frills hotel with no tv or safe, but it did have free WiFi. We too felt the room and bathroom were small. Parking is about a 10 minute walk away (uphill from the parking lot). Convenient to downtown via the C3 bus that stops very near the cathedral. The staff was friendly. During the day, other than lunch, there seemed to be only one person working and he did everything from serving to checking people in and out. Also, during the day the A/C was turned off and wouldn’t come on again until 2pm. That would be fine except there was a heat wave that year and it was 97 outside. Breakfast consisted of chorizo, cheese, bread, fruit, juice, tea/coffee, so it was more of a continental one. There is no elevator. Overall, we enjoyed it for the location and access to the Alhambra complex. When we wanted a break, we went to the room for a quick rest before heading out again.
We stayed there 2 years ago. We had a family room that was reasonably large, 2 separate bedrooms. Noise was not a problem, it's quiet at night. We had a car and they offered valet parking, and it's fairly easy to get there bypassing the traffic and narrow streets of the city. It's definitely basic, (but comfortable) but its appeal is obviously the setting. We'd been to Granada before, and I am not sure I'd recommend it for a first time visit., I think for a first time visitor you'd rather be down in the city. But for a repeat visitor, it's definitely worth considering.
Unless you really want Hotel America, consider the Parador on the grounds. We stayed there in early March a few years ago, and it was fabulous. Quiet, but such a great location It was nice to come/go from the Alhambra. If you are eligible, they offer a really nice senior deal that includes a fabulous included breakfast. And, seems I recall the senior age is 50 or 55?
The Granada parador is one of the most expensive of any of the Paradors. If you wanted to stay there, it fills up quickly and plan on spending €230 and probably more, each night. During the main tourist season it will be considerably more. The senior rate is for those above 55. My wife and I frequently stay at paradors and they all have a nice breakfast buffet. The paradors have a free friends of paradors program. The paradors website is www.parador.es/en if you wanted to check them out and check prices. It is a few feet from Hotel America right at the Alhambra complex.
