We are looking for a couple of hikes in the Basque Country. We are thinking of home base in San Sebastien, but that is negotiable. Hikes would be somewhere between 8-15 miles with elevation gains up to 3000 feet. Loop trails would be preferable, but am not opposed to out and back. Natural beauty and well marked trails is what we are looking for.
Take a look at the Baztan Valley. It is in the Basque part of Navarra, not too far from San Sebastien. There are many hike paths through the valley. Gorramendi on the east end of the valley and is one of the highest points, and it is 1074m (about 3500 ft). On the south side of the valley, on the border with France is the Izpegi pass, and it is 630m (about 2000 ft) There are several restaurants there so you can take a nice hike around the area, and have a nice meal.
The Navarra tourism board has a Baztan Valley page.
Two easy ones with a lot of wow factor—along coast to Pasai Donibane and out from Zumai to the flysch formations. .
Hiking is a very popular activity for us Basques, as this region is famous for its mountains and valleys. Come prepared for any kind of weather (it´s snowing now in many mountains in the Basque Country, and expected on urban areas too), it tends to be rainy. Routes are very well marked and there are plenty near Donostia-San Sebastian. I would recommend the flysch route between Getaria and Zumaia, also part of the Camino de Santiago to Pasai Donibane, and if you prefer something more spectacular, the mountain range of Aitzgorri is simply spectacular. One of my favorite hikes is Ernio mountain, another one is Txindoki, and the other one I like is Aratz. But there are dozens to choose from, Wikiloc or Komoot can be of help.
