Hiking: Camino de Santiago

Hi all,

Forgive the multiple posts on multiple country forums but I am looking for a place to go hiking in a couple weeks.

After an amazing experience near Bolzano last weekend, we are trying to do another one before the weather changes. From the kind people to the cows in green pastures to the mountain huts for meals, it was unforgettable.

I would love any suggestions for the last week in October. Where to start and stop; we need to get to Barcelona eventually.

Thank you!

Since you specifically mention the Camino de Santiago and you have a week, you could start in O’Cebreiro and walk all the way into Santiago de Compostela. Depending on your daily walk, that would take about six days. It isn’t necessarily the prettiest part of the Camino and is the busiest, but there are some nice views, pretty scenery, and the people are friendly. By starting east of Sarria you’d also be eligible for your Compostela upon arrival in Santiago. There are also a number of trails in the Picos de Europa area. Further east is the Camino Del Cid. One could hike various distances. Another list of walking trails are Spain’s Greenways, former railway paths converted to walking paths.

I don't have direct experience with hiking the Camino but friends recently posted that they had trouble finding restaurants and places to stay along the route as many were closed. They hiked 30 miles one day before they found a place to sleep. They have decided not to continue and are now biking in Austria. Others may have a different experience depending on the section that you chose to walk - it's just something to check out before you commit!

Stay in Sotres, in the Picos de Europa. Several day hikes to chose from just walking out your door.
