I'd really like to underline some passages in my Rick Steves Spain guidebook, but, over the years, my attempts at highlighting in other guides has resulted in the marker bleeding through to the other side of the page. Has anyone come across a method or brand of marker that doesn't bleed through?
It might not suit your needs, but I use those little Post-It arrows that are used to point to where signatures are needed on paperwork.
They come in colors, so I can categorize things I mark.
I'm certain some will find fault with this, and maybe for good reason, but I can't bring myself to tear sections out and throw away as I travel. Hence, I copy pages I will use, and organize into a ziplock bag by cities. I can highlight them with regular highlighters and toss the pages into recycling as I travel. However, for the first time, we are taking a RS tour (Rome) so for the first time, we will be taking the whole guide that was provided and I have been using various color pens to mark sections or lines of the book. At this point, I still do not love reading digital books, but as I move closer to purchasing books that way, I find myself using the highlighter to mark certain parts of those.
Another option if you use the RS guide's walks, is that you will find if you download the RS audio europe app, you can dowload the walks and other info. It has the actual written portion (as well as the maps!) from the guide as well as the audio. Unfortunately, no way to highlight those.
Jeff,
Amazon sells special highlighters (called Bible highlighters) that aren't supposed to bleed through thin Bible pages.
A little on the higher price scale. Pen comes with refills. https://www.amazon.com/Bible-Book-Highlighter-Pack-Refill/dp/B07179KBM6/ref=asc_df_B07179KBM6/?tag=bingshoppinga-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid={creative}&hvpos={adposition}&hvnetw=o&hvrand={random}&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=e&hvdev=t&hvdvcmdl={devicemodel}&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=&hvtargid=pla-4584138860821734&psc=1
Wow, sorry for the humongous link, lol.
Maybe try Staples or Christian book stores?
Scrolling down, saw these too https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B07NVBZ3VX/ref=sspa_mb_hqp_detail_mobile_aax_0?ie=UTF8&psc=1
A better deal it seems.
There's no such thing as Christian bookstores anymore, except online.
Cala, maybe not where you are. Up here, there are many - sometimes near a church or free-standing brick and mortar ones.
After taking 17 RS tours along with the accompanying guide books, I too experienced the same "bleed thru" then using a typical highlight marker. I long ago started using the page tabs as LIZinPA posted. This also allows me to make "coded" notes on the part of the tab that sticks out from from the guide book.
Wow, thanks for that tip, Girasole! That's just what I need to highlight paragraphs in my guidebooks!
Lol, you are welcome Rebecca. I hope they work. Amazon has a good return policy even if you pay shipping - gets refunded.
A friend uses those Bible markers; seem to work. He has different colors.
Correction - I'm not certain what brand or where he got them. He's been using them awhile. What I meant by "those" is the concept of the non bleed highlighters.
There you are again, Girasole, the gal in the know. Just ordered a couple on Amazon!
Lol, thanks jules. I hope they work well π
Besides bag reviews, we can now do "non-bleed" highlighter for guide books/college books reviews. Lol.
We solved the torn out pages and highlighted parts problems by going to Kindle Versions on our iPad mini's. Family share allows each of us to download the relevant guidebooks and highlight what each of us wants. And holiday presents include large Amazon gift cards for airplane reading and new guidebooks for planning the next trip. And you can carry the older version with its highlights even if you buy a newer version.
I just underline or mark passages with a ballpoint pen. Seems to work.
Girasole, wicked good! LOL!
Thanks for the tips. I like the Bible highlighters. Who knew? I,too, have copied pages, but we're trying to travel light. We'll have a Kindle, but boy, I like books. "Light" means, two real cameras, a phone, multiple chargers and spare batteries and the Kindle. Oh, yeah, clothes, too, I guess
Girasole, wicked good! LOL!
Haha Rebecca, "wicked good" - A New England phrase.
Oh, yeah, clothes,too, I guess
Too funny, Jeff.
Oh, yeah, clothes,too, I guess
Guess that depends on where you are going.
I did a quick Google search and found 30 Christian Bookstores within walking distance of the house I grew up in. So they do still exist in some parts of the US.

Yes. Some may go under a Catholic name, some under a Saint's name and others a Christian name. It all depends.
Girasole, great tip on the highlighters...I've been using tiny post-its to mark sections, but the Bible highlighters will be helpful. We still have a few small independent bookstores and several nearby Christian ones that I can check.
Jules m, I haven't yet had the courage to tear my guidebooks apart either. I'm using 3 books (for 3 countries) for this trip, so I know I will so that I can carry just the pages I want in a city. I like your idea of organizing the sections into ziplocks.
@CWSocial, I often use more than one brand of guidebook so copying the pages and combining sites and then cities helps me a lot. For my upcoming trip I have an "Uffizi" stapled packet that also has a page from Lonely planet that I liked.
Jules m, another great idea, thank you! I'm always getting guide books from the library. And recently I have found myself retyping way too much content into OneNote where I organize my trips. A few photocopied pages from each book makes a lot of sense, especially to be able to carry them with me when I'm out for a day. Sometimes these simple little ideas are so helpful!
Compared with a few years ago, Rickβs books have noticeably thinner pages, so bleed-through would be much more likely than a 2008 book. Hope the no-bleed highlighters will be bleed-free, even as the paper gets thinner, and maybe more relatively absorbent.
