Help with sensible order, please.

Hi there, very excited because at the ripe old age of ..... let's just say middle age.... we are finally getting to Spain. We will be flying from Dublin and then flight home to New Zealand is from Barcelona.
We are planning 15 / 16 days (including flight days) around late September We will probably just use public transport although we could look at driving in rural areas.

The possible plan is :
Fly in to Malaga or Seville or Granada? Seems Malaga is most direct , cheapest option to fly into Southern Spain.
Then we would like to spend time in (no particular order- that's what we would appreciate feedback on)
the three places above, possibly Ronda or similar small town, Cordoba. Approximately seven or eight nights in Southern Spain.
Then we would take the train to Madrid for perhaps 3 nights and across to Barcelona for the same,

Can you suggest a sensible order without too much backtracking and probably with public transport?
We did think 3 nights Seville, and two nights (one if we had to) in other places. We really prefer two nights over one.
We are pretty open to alternatives eg another little spot instead of Ronda.
It won't be a beachy holiday( although we do like the coast!) We like small towns, big cities, food, wine, walking around and seeing everyday life, art, churches...we won't be hitting the nightclubs at our advanced ages.
The only 'definite' at this stage is flying out of Barcelona on Oct 5th.
Hoping my rambling makes sense and thanks in advance.

If Malaga is your best option, fly there, then take the train to Granada.

Granada 2-3 nights
Sevilla 2-3 nights
Cordoba 2 nights
Toledo 1-2 nights
Barcelona, the rest.

Read this article which explains the Spanish train system and how to use their website. You can do the entire trip easily by train. If you want to visit the small hill towns, you will want to rent a car from Granada to Sevilla, spending 2 nights en route to do it well.

You can visit Toledo as a day trip, if you choose to stay in Madrid, but it is a much better experience as an overnight visit.

It's less than an hour by train from Sevilla to Cordoba. You can spend your last day in Sevilla and take an evening train to Cordoba. That gives you 2 evenings in Cordoba (lovely, quiet) and a full day to see some of its sights.

It's about 2 hours by train to Madrid. Then you take the commuter train (about 1/2 hour) to Toledo. You can leave most of your luggage in a locker in the Madrid train station and just take an overnight bag to Toledo.

Barcelona has many attractions and 3 days is too little. There are also great day trips that you can do by train.

I have not included Madrid because of all the places, it is the least interesting - unless you want to visit the exceptionally good art museums (Prado, Thyssen, Reina Sofia) and the royal palace.

Fly into Malaga, unless you find a great flight to the others. Malaga should be the easiest. Then spend a day in Malaga if desired, or skip it and head straight for Granada.
I'd skip Malaga, but that's just me.
So I'd go
Granada - 2-3 nights Granada
to Ronda - 2 nights
Seville - 3+ nights - the rest of your time, then take a train to Madrid. Day trip to Cordoba
OR go to Codoba early one day, spend the night there, and take the train the next day to Madrid. Cordoba is on the high speed line between Seville - Madrid so makes sense to do it last if you are spending the night.

Thank you both so much for the advice -it was exactly what I was needing in terms of organising order.

@NewZealand Rose.... I will not give you my view on how to best distribute your days because, as you can see my city in my profile, I couldn't possibly be unbiased, hahaha!

However, please do feel free to ask anything that comes to mind for your stretch of the trip covering Catalonia... which, being my home turf, is the one I do know better.

Btw... I don't want to meddle in your plans, and for the dates you mention is unlikely you'd be able to fit this in unless you were prepared to sacrifice other destinations, but around the 17-19th of Sep and until the 24-26th, the city of Barcelona celebrates one of its biggest festivals in honour of La Mercè, one of the city's co-patrons. The exact dates are decided by the City Hall a few months in advance, but it tends to be Thu to Tue. It's a festival deeply rooted in Catalan heritage, and it has been happening every year since the mid 1600s. These days it includes all sort of performances (art, music, folk, etc) in its program as well as many other activities for people all ages including, and especially, kids (conferences, exhibitions, workshops...). These +600 activities and performances happen across several neighbourhoods of the city, some take the shape of open air activities, some are parades and some are indoors (theatres, social clubs...). These are well adjusted with the normal day-to-day life of the city (after all, Mercè or not, most of us we have to work during business hours, lol!), hence the reason it also includes a week-end. And in case any one wonders, no, La Mercè does not bring the city to a halt either: you may have specific streets/sites, on specific times, that are going to be closed to traffic for whatever activity is going to be celebrated there, but life goes on in the rest of the city. One of the most spectacular events is the pyromusical on the last evening, this is 2014's -for reference, this is the same place on a normal day.

Some more info: https://www.fest300.com/festivals/les-festes-de-la-merce and this was last year's program.

PS: Ah yes, an important detail: ALL activities and performances at La Mercè festival are free and open to everybody.

... well, I hope to have succeeded in you questioning your present itinerary, :)))

Then consider if it's possible (and worth it) to fly from Dublin to Barcelona, then train to Madrid, Andalucia, and fly from Granada to Barcelona. Or maybe better to fly Barcelona-Granada, then the rest of Andalucia and Madrid, then back to Barcelona.

It will add significant costs, some for the extra travel in Spain, but also because hotels will probably be much more expensive in Barcelona during the festival. On the other hand, it's a unique opportunity.

I would keep it nice and simple...
Sep 20 Fly from Dublin to Madrid - 4 nts
Sep 24 Train to Sevilla - 3 nts
Sep 27 Train to Cordoba - 2 nts (or spend just 1 night in Cordoba, then head to Ronda on Sep 28 for 1 night also)
Sep 29 Train to Granada - 2 nts
Oct 1 Fly to Barcelona - 4 nts
Oct 5 Fly home from Barcelona
