Health insurance experiences

We are planning on spending 12 weeks (84 days) in Spain next year and are thinking of getting health insurance to cover that time in case medical needs come up.

I would like to hear from anyone that has done something similar in Europe and purchase health insurance either here or in Spain (don't know if that is possible).

I specially would like to hear from those that had to use it, what was your experience, would you recommend the one you purchased. Any other tip would be appreciated.

Thank you in advance

We've used Travel Guard and the one claim we had was handled quite nicely. We had to pay up front (credit card) and got reimbursed. That may or may not be the type thing you are seeking. At any rate, they have a variety of policies that are quite comprehensive and cover many things in addition to medical insurance. Usually if you take out the policy within 15 days of your first deposit pre-existing conditions are covered but check the policy carefully. In addition, most travel policies have medical evacuation coverage. But they USUALLY will only evacuate you to the nearest hospital than can treat you. There is a company named "Med Jet Assist" that has a number of membership plans. It in NOT medical insurance -- just med evacuation coverage. As long as you are more than 150 miles from home, they will, if medically necessary, fly you back to your home hospital in a medical jet with medical personnel. Google those two companies and see what you think.

Nestor, we buy Travel Guard on recommendation from an agent we know who has been arranging and leading trips for 40 years and has a 2nd home in Europe. Thankfully have not needed to use it yet.

But there's no "thinking about it" for us: we wouldn't go to abroad without adequate medical coverage, including evac. back the to the U.S., and we buy it as soon as we book our air. Of course you'll want to see what your existing policy covers.

While waiting for others to respond, you might want to read what Mr. Steves has to say about the subject?

You absolutely need medical insurance when abroad! If you are on Medicare, be aware that it will NOT cover you outside the United States. Some supplemental plans will cover some emergency treatment. Whatever kind of coverage you have at home, your first step should be to contact your insurance company and ask them what they might cover.

I have bought travel insurance over the years from Travel Guard, Roam Right, and World Nomads. Fortunately I have never had to file a claim, but having the policy has always given me piece of mind. You can easily compare various policies at insuremytrip.com

Blue Cross offers a travel medical plan that I have not personally used but am considering: https://www.geobluetravelinsurance.com

I use American Express and buy health coverage as well as medical evacuation insurance. Did a 7 week trip last year that cost me a little over $50 for both wife and self.
