Haro & La Rioja - Wineries and Activities

Good day all,

We are planning on staying in Haro for 4 days. What recommendations do you have for wineries, family activities and attractions in the area?

Thanks,

Nate

Will you have a car? What time of year?

What you can do and see depends a lot on these things.

Hi again dlindstrom,

we enjoy a full day of exploring, and are most excited to see the wineries, small towns/villages, tapas bars and other cultural attractions in the area.

Rioja wine country (Rioja D.O.C., Denominación de Origen Calificada), not to be mistaken with La Rioja, is divided into Rioja Alta (Haro and surroundings, in La Rioja), Rioja Alavesa (Laguardia, Labastida...it´s the Basque Rioja) and Rioja Oriental (in La Rioja and Navarre). Haro offers easy visits in El Barrio de la Estación, my favorite ones Gómez Cruzado and Roda (I recommend the full visit, not just the tasting). Towards Labastida, in Rioja Alavesa, you have Tierra, or Remelluri as great wineries. And near Laguardia there are a big number of wineries, many family owned, complicated to recommend just a few...I tend to focus on the small, family owned ones, making real Rioja wine (the "maceración carbónica" process is the classic in Rioja and it´s widely unknown as it´s not exported).
