The entire area between Jaén and Jerez de la Frontera has experienced some terrible flooding. Some areas have been hit worse than others and another storm is on its way. Literally, hundreds of roads have been closed. A number of videos of Spain and Portugal result if one searches on Storm Leonardo.
It appears that there was severe damage in and around Barbate, and in La Janda, the region that encompasses Vejer de la Frontera and it´s coastline. I'll be there next month so will have a close look at the recovery, which I hope will be underway soon. It´s been quite a terrible year for Andalucia, weather wise.
I'm in cadiz and can't even begin to describe the weather event. Storm Leonardo has raged for the 9 days we've been here. Storm Marta arrived today and it got far worse, the winds were so ferocious we couldnt venture outside.
Alongside trains being canceled, due to the train accident, as of the 5th of Feb all trains in Andalucia are now cancelled due to the weather. Tomorrow we have to take a taxi between Cadiz and Cordoba.
Certainly I've experienced bad weather in Spain over the many yeras we've been visiting, but nothing remotely like this. It's been a wild ride!!
Stay safe. It seems Spain has had a rough go of it the last 2 seasons with rain events and severe flooding.
I was planning on a road trip from Seville to Ronda in early March, possibly going through Grazalema on the road through the mountains. (My original plan was Seville -> Arcos de La Frontera -> Grazalema -> Zahara de la Sierra -> Ronda).
Do I need to take a different route? Is that mountain road impassable now?
@rmazor - a lot will change between now and March, but looking at the current road closures, I’d change my route if I was traveling it today. The road between Arcos de la Frontera and Grazalema, then up to Zahara de la Sierra is closed most of the way. If I’m reading the map correctly most of the closures seem to be debris on the road, but there is some lingering flooding.
Even coming from the north through Olvera and Setenil de la Bodegas, there are some road closures. A problem with road closures in that area is there are not many alternative routes.
There are almost 40 road closures in western Andalucia, mostly in the province of Cadiz.
This article is in Spanish but it lists the numbers of the closed highways and roads, including roads to and from Ronda, Arcos, Grazalema,, Olvera, Sentenil, Jerez and Vejer:
There have also been rail strikes in many areas.
I'll be renting a car in that area next month, so will keep an eye on the situation and report back before or during my visit..
