We will be driving from Granada to either Algeciras or Tarifa to catch a ferry to Tangier. We will be leaving the rental car in either city. Although we would prefer to leave from Tarifa, we have not been able to find a rental company that allows drop off in Tarifa. I know that we can take a shuttle bus from Algeciras to Tarifa, bit it seems like too much hassle. Any experiences or suggestions?
While you can take a ferry from Algeciras to Tangier, they arrive at the Tangier Med port, 25 miles east of Tangier and a bit of a hassle. Comes (www.tgcomes.es) has 14 buses per day (less on weekends) to Tarifa from Algeciras. The last time I was there, I dropped of my Europcar rental in Algeciras and walked a few blocks to the bus station, where I caught the bus to Tarifa and spent the night. I booked my ferry ticket at the port the night before and the next morning I took the ferry directly to Tangier (there are ferries nearly hourly). Are you coming back to Spain or flying out of Morocco? If you are coming back to Spain, you could keep the car and park it in Tarifa. I'd spend a night in Tarifa on each end, then head out the next day to your next destination in Spain. If you are planning on traveling around Morocco and flying out from there, then dropping the car in Algeciras will be your best option.
Thank you for the info...Our itinerary is pretty set for this visit. We will be flying from Tangier back to Madrid, so we will need to leave the car in Algeciras. I suppose my main concern is how late the ferries cross from Tarifa, since we'll be arriving there late in the afternoon at the earliest! I'll search for that information, unless you have the ferry website at your fingertips! ; )
The ferries generally run until 22:00. The websites are FRS - www.frs.es (departs Tarifa on odd hours) and InterShipping - www.intershipping.es (depart Tarifa on even hours).
