is a day trip Granada to Ronda, return to Granada for evening, doable---train or bus?

Yes, absolutely do-able!! Definitely see Ronda, even if for just a couple of hours.

Are you going to be elsewhere in Andalusia? It might be easier to day trip from somewhere else, or to visit en route to your next destination. I do encourage you to visit Ronda (one of my faves).

4 hours minimum (including lunch) will give you a good feel for Ronda - the gorge, bridge, bullring, parador etc.
A bus from Sevilla may be quicker than train.
