Our flight arrives in Madrid around noon, so by the time we get into Atocha it will likely be a good time to have lunch. Does anyone know of a tasty budget eatery near the station? I get hangry. I need to eat before I can navigate or else I just get frustrated instead of enjoying getting lost :) Something around 10 euro per person (or less) would be ideal, we're not picky eaters and we like trying new things.
There are plenty of choices In the station, why not see what appeals.
If all else fails, look for a Pans & Co (sort of like a Spanish version of Subway). They've hit the spot for me on many occasions when I just wanted a quick sandwich, and as a bonus they're open much longer hours than regular sit-down restaurants.
Here are a few options:

Personally, I'd grab something at the airport before you leave. Depending on how long it takes you to get through immigration and the transport option you choose to get to town, it could be 2 p.m. or later before you get to Atocha. When all else fails, I pack granola bars and nuts for those pesky hangry situations :)
Head through the atrium and out the narrow end of the station. Across the stree is a McDonalds, but also the start of Paseo del Prado. Stay on the same side as the McDs. A variety of eateries there. A few blocks down was a cafeteria (not like an American one) with a reasonable menu del dia. Perhaps 12E, but a full bottle of wine in 2017 as well as hot meal and dessert. Calle de Almoden is, if I recall, one of the tapas streets RS me tions. Check what the lunch hours are. There is a Museo de jamon for all things Ham. At the least, you can get a sandwich.
If you get there early, you can check your bags in the locker room. Then go take a walk. We like the restaurant in the station, but it's not cheap. Getting rid of our luggage and sitting for a few hours in a restaurant really hit the spot for us on a recent trip. Good luck, buen viaje!
