Going to Spain for 9 days...

Hi all! In Sept-Oct my husband and I are going to Spain to celebrate our 25th anniversary. We are definitely going to be in Barcelona for the first 4.5 days (out of 9). Trying to figure out what to do for the second half of the trip. I was in southern Spain 26 years ago and my husband has never been. If you were us, would you:

  1. Stay in Barcelona and take day trips to Girona and / Valencia? (seem so interesting and beautiful)
  2. Fly to Mallorca and spend the entire rest of the time there? (different and romantic?)
  3. Fly to Madrid and spend the entire rest of the time there? (because we "should" because we are in Spain)
  4. None of the above....new idea?

Thanks in advance for your input!

If I were you, I would stick with Barcelona and use it as a base for a few day trips. Girona makes a great day trip, and there are multiple other day trip options from Barcelona.

And....if I were you....I would divide my time between Barcelona and Madrid. I would arrange flights into one and out of the other....commonly known as "open jaw"....
I would take the high speed AVE train between the two cities, and I would dedicate one entire day to Toledo.

I would also agree to divide your time between Madrid and Barcelona. We did the same for 9 nights several years ago. We enjoyed a day trip to Toledo. We took the 2.5 hr AVE rail from Madrid to Barcelona. If we had an extra day we would have gone to Girona. Next time!

Hello and congrats on your upcoming 25th anniversary! May I ask when exactly in September you are planning this trip? The reason being that you may be in Barcelona for our annual city festival, La Mercè (Sep 21-24). The festival itself is huge, there are 100s of events spread throughout Barcelona's squares, streets, museums, and parks. The best part - all the entertainment is free! This is something that we put on for ourselves, not just for tourists. If you want to experience Catalan culture like a local, at least for a few days, this is a great opportunity.

I would recommend you shoot for at least a couple of days in Barcelona during the Mercè festivities. Here is the festival program: https://www.barcelona.cat/lamerce/en/programa-per-tematica

Now after those 4.5 days in Barcelona, hopefully in time for La Mercè, the question is where to go next for the next 4.5 days? Here are my two recommendations for a romantic getaway:

Menorca or Mallorca - you could spend some quality time in one of our Balearic Islands, late Sept/ early Oct should still be beach weather at the Balearics, though less tourists than in the high summer months. I know you mentioned Mallorca, which is the more popular one, but also strongly consider it's smaller cousin Menorca, just as or even more beautiful and definitely more relaxed then Mallorca. You can fly or even take a boat there from Barcelona. The capital of Menorca, Mahón, is delightful and has a long and interesting history, this is where mayonnaise was invented!

The Orange Blossom Coast - aka the Costa del Azahar this along with the Coasta Dorada, make up the stretch of coastline between Barcelona and Valencia. It's a land full of ancient olive trees, citrus groves, sandy beaches, lazy beach towns, time-warped castles, and Roman Ruins. A nice romantic roadtrip could be to rent a car and drive down from Barcelona to Valencia, stopping at places like Sitges, Tarragona, and Peñíscola. Here's an article from Rough Guides about this area: The Orange Blossom Coast: the Spanish Costa you’ve never heard of

P.S Personally I don't think Madrid in October is very romantic for a 25th anniversary, which is why I don't particularity recommend it for you guys. Hope this helps :)

And Carlos, I would have loved to have gone to the festival in Barcelona, but we are not arriving until the 30th of September. :(

  1. Yes. Barcelona has lots to see and do. Girona is a good day trip or even an overnighter and a good change because of its well-preserved medieval historic center. Valencia is too far for a day trip but it is a charming town with some excellent sights.

When you count days, don't count arrival day (sleep-deprived, jetlagged haze) or departure day (you won't have time to do much more than pack and get to the airport 3 hours before flight time). Whether you venture to a more distant part of Spain depends on what your departure airport options are.

@Carlos, thanks for mentioning La Merce.' I meant to recommend this amazing festival! We were fortunate to be there during our stay. It certainly was a wonderful cultural experience.

I would suggest dividing your time between Barcelona and Madrid (do day trips to Segovia and Toledo).
