Girona in the afternoon and evening

We will arrive in Girona early afternoon (maybe 14:00-15:00 hr) and can/will remain there until 20:00-21:00 hr (assuming the town is "open" later in the evening). We'll be there on a Friday if that matters. We'll arrive and depart by train (from Figueres and to Barcelona). It appears the train station is a bit of a hike from the Old Town Center; is this so and are there buses, taxis, etc. to the Old Town? I understand the Cathedral is open from 16:00 to 19:00, I assume the shops/restaurants along the Centre Bonastruc Ca Porta will be open later in the evening, but I'd be grateful for confirmation. I have the same question for restaurants/shops along the Passeig Arqueologic? Will we be able to enter the Esglesia se Sant Feliu and/or the Banys Arabs in the evening? Any comments on the places I've noted, or recommendations for alternative venues, would be appreciated.

I LOVE Girona. You could spend a couple days there, but sometimes, you have the time you have and that's it. We walked from the train station to our inn which was right by the cathedral. With luggage it was a hike, but I'm guessing you won't have any? Because you have so little time, I would suggest that if you do elect for a taxi, you just have them drop you at the river, because thats where the "fun stuff" starts. We went back and forth across the river a few times, there are several bridges and all the views are nice. The river and surrounding structures are stunning. There is an Eiffel designed bridge. I don't recall much in the way of restaurants/shops along the Passeig Arqueologic. We walked it at dusk to sunset and it was so beautiful, quite a memory. The Banys Arabs were interesting. I'd suggest googling for times. Sant Feliu and the cathedral are on the same ticket. Again, google for times. There is a museum/house on the river you can tour to get an idea of what those homes are like. I was sorry we didn't have time for that. It seemed a popular sight, details must be in a guide book. You have not said what time of year you are traveling. We were there at the end of December and we were surprised to see a fair number of people. I think its due to Game of Thrones. Have fun!

We'll be in Girona October 18. We'd planned to visit Girona on a previous visit to Barcelona, but one of us was ill that day and we stayed the majority of the day in the hotel. Yes, we wish we had more time this visit, but at least we'll get a brief encounter; who knows, maybe we can return. Is there a statue that can be touched (like the Trevi fountain and coins thrown therein) to assure we return? Go to know about crisscrossing the river. Thanks for the information.

Jon, I was in Girona for an overnight just a couple weeks ago, and throughly enjoyed my limited time there. When I was there, things were very quiet, and I was told that both locals and visitors were mostly at nearby beach towns during the summer. Some random comments: the train station is far enough from the old town that I would certainly recommend a taxi, for just a few euros. Use your time and energy in the old town. There should be a line of taxis at the station, although you might need to have someone call one for the return. A couple of the sites I especially enjoyed were strolling along the Roman walls, including the nearby informal garden/park areas along the walls. Also the excellent museum of Jewish history in old town Girona. I enjoyed visiting the Arab Baths, the visit doesn’t really take more than 15 minutes or so. As for the Cathedral and other churches, for me the exteriors were more impressive than the interiors, assuming you’ve seen other major, old churches in Spain and elsewhere in Europe. Mostly, you can just wander the ancient small streets in old town Girona. I especially enjoyed a lunch at Mimolet, a small restaurant near the “bottom” of the old town. It is not inexpensive, but nowhere as costly or inaccessible as some of the more famous Michellin-starred Girona restaurants. If interested, you should check their schedule, as they do close between late afternoon and dinner time.

That statue that you can touch (so that you'll be sure to return) is across the street in front of Saint Feliu--between it and the river. It is against the wall of a building.
