Gijon vs Oviedo

Hi everyone. Looking to travel to this area in Spain. Any suggestions on which one we use as abase? Do we need a cargo go around either place and would anyone know if Uber exists?

Any other tips for hotels and restaurants will be greatly appreciated.

Happy Travels everyone.

I like Oviedo. Haven't been to Gijon.

I didn't need a car in Oviedo. It's very compact.

Two very different cities, Oviedo is the capital of Asturias. Gijón is a bit bigger, coastal, both with lots of atmosphere. Oviedo offers preromanesque churches nearby (San Miguel de Lillo and Santa María del Naranco), Gijón has a beach (but this is the north and beach weather is not always an option). I´d use Oviedo as a base, Uber is very irrelevant in Spain, but in both cities you go walking everywhere.

I stayed in Oviedo for three nights last year and we did a day trip to Gijon. We caught the train to and from Oviedo and used a bus to day trip to Gijon (train was also an option but bus was more convenient).

All of Oviedo is walkable from the station (we stayed in an Airbnb quite close to the station).

Gijon was also walkable. We combined lunch at a Michelin star restaurant (Auga) with a nice walk around the headland.

Oviedo is more historic and atmospheric. Gijon is apparently livelier--it's said to be where the folks from Oviedo go for entertainment.
